Travellers from across the Alps in the midth century found Florence - then the centre of Early Renaissance art - very different in appearance from the northern cities. Instead of church spires piercing the sky, the Florentine skyline was dominated, as it still is today, by the enormous mass of the cathedral dome rising above low houses, smaller churches.   The idea was put into reality for the facade of the Santa Maria Novella church in Florence (completed CE). The use of columns and pediment strongly remind of a Roman temple front. Alberti went even further with his facade for the San Andrea church (designed c. CE) of Mantua. A relevant exhibit is an early XVII century fresco copy of the Mantegna Triumphs coming from a local private palace. Personally I regret the lack of a section dedicated to the story of the urban evolution of Mantua, with views, maps and 3D models.
